So Austria sounds a little traditional, does it? Well, you're wrong! When Fred Loimer took over his dad's winery in 1997, the first thing he did was to buy an old vaulted cellar from the 19th century.

OK, so far, so staid. But then he built a stunning, sheer black cubic winery over the top of it. And then he converted all of his 65 hectares to biodynamic viticulture, while setting up an association to encourage other farmers to do likewise!

Meanwhile, he's made a raft of elegant and charming wines like this cherry-packed yet rustic, spicy-finishing red.

Weingut Loimer owns 65 hectares of vineyards around Langenlois in the Kamptal, north-west of Vienna. Fred Loimer took control of the family-owned concern in 1997, having studied at Austria's Klosterneuburg University. One of the first things he did was to purchase a vaulted, 19th century brick cellar, over the top of which he built s striking, minimalist, black cubic winery. He began the conversion to biodynamic viticulture in 2006, all of his estate wines being officially certified in 2009. In 2007, Fred formed an organisation called respekt-BIODYN, to encourage and implement biodynamic principles in viticulture.

Weingut Loimer's estate covers seven different soil types, with a cool climate and southerly aspect offering ample scope for the production of complex, high quality wines. Three quarters of its output comes from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, the only two varietals permitted by Kamptal DAC regulations, but the rest embraces a diversity beyond DAC rules, with some ten further grapes in the cellar and in the product range. In the vineyard too a great diversity of flora and fauna is encouraged.

This Pinot Noir is harvested by hand in the middle of September, and undergoes spontaneous fermentation in oak vats at 30˚. Maceration lasts three weeks and the wine is aged for 14 months in used 300 litre oak casks.
Charming aromas of red berries lead to a rustic palate with soft tannins and an invigoratingly vibrant mouthfeel. Easy drinking yet classy, with fine balance and a touch of minerality.
