It was rock rap legends, the Beastie Boys who told the world "duh duh duh da Sabotage!" (alright we don’t know the actual lyrics) A powerful indictment on the developed world's dependants on mechanization.
In an interview with Jeremy Paxman the Beastie Boys said, "sure Sabotage is allegorical; we pollute our skies, contaminate our soils and poison our water supply for a mechanized work force, the idea was to make our lives easier with substantially more leisure time and has it happened? No. If anything we're working longer than ever in worsening conditions; the internet & smart phones prompt us to be on call 24/7. We say Sabotage! Look at Luddite winery, they use minimal mechanisation, yet the quality of their wine is outstanding. Their red blend has potent aromas of black and red berries, fynbos, garrigue, all spice and hints of toasted wood, all of which travel onto the palate supported by a rich mouthfeel and supple tannins!"

Founded in 1999 by husband and wife team Niel and Penny Verburg. In 2012 they released their first Saboteur wine.
Luddite pride themselves in the fact that they farm conscientiously with minimum mechanisation, aiming to make a wine that is natural as possible. They farm green without being certified. They do not irrigate, as they believe that every vintage tells a story. They hand pick their grapes. They naturally ferment, don’t use any enzymes or refining agents, in fact nothing gets added to the wine except sulphur. The sulphur levels are similar to those people farming or producing organically or biodynamically.
The Cab Sauvignon and Mourvedre were fermented in small batches in open bins with regular hand punch downs. The Shiraz was fermented in Stainless steel with regular pump overs. The batches were pressed directly into barrel and allowed to mature with fermentation lees. After fermentation the wine was racked and returned to barrel for a further 18 months All the components spent 6 months in old French Oak barrels. At no stage was anything added to this wine. We racked and made up the blend and the only time we added SO2 was to protect the wine for the bottling process.
