It wasn’t all that long ago that white port was a mere curiosity, like as a child when you discovered Mars made a Dark Chocolate Bounty, your child brain thinking “I’m glad I have this information and I love the red packaging but I’m never going to eat it because dark chocolate is gross!”

How times have changed, not only is white port no longer the Dark Chocolate Bounty of the fortified wine world, it’s down right cool! While once white port was overly oxidative, over oaked and over extracted, producers such as Niepoort focus on a balance of freshness and nutty complexity that work on its own as an aperitif or with tonic and a wedge of lemon.
Niepoort Vinhos was established in 1842, originally as a Dutch port shipper. Dirk Niepoort is the 5th generation incumbent, and the company now producers both fortified and non-fortified wines. Niepoort's mission is to continue to produce distinctive Port and Douro wines, combining centuries-old tradition with innovation. The importance Niepoort attach to the need to interpret soils, climates and grape varieties has led them on the path of Organic and Biodynamic production methods, minimal intervention, while retaining high quality.

The white grapes undergo long skin maceration, occasionally with foot treading in lagares, with fermentation carrying on to near dryness, before the addition of pure grape brandy. Ageing is carried in small old oak casks in cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for at least 3.5 years before bottling.
