If we were to tell you that the grapes for Orin Swift Blank Stare are harvested from the cool climate Russian River Valley, providing a distinct diurnal range, preserving acidity, and are then barrel fermented in French Oak to deliver spiced characters that are atypical for Sauvignon; you may stare blankly at us. You'll probably then look down at your phone and see what Dwayne Johnson has just eaten for breakfast... "must be a cheat day; that is a lot of pancakes!"
However, if we were to tell you this wine has all the things you love about Sauvignon; fresh acidity with flavours of grapefruit, stone fruit and fresh cut grass but with heaps more complexity and body thanks to the oak, you might stare at us the way all film directors, requiring a human man with muscles, stares at Dwayne Johnson - Longingly.
Orin Swift was started in 1998 by Dave Phinney and has since grown into one of the most renowned boutique wine brands in the US.
The wines of Orin Swift represent the best of modern Californian winemaking, they’re a move away from tradition to a more handsy, feel based approach to winemaking, where the accepted stylistic requirements are thrown out the window.
The philosophy at Orin Swift is simple – find the best grapes they can, let them hang and ripen, and then express the profile of the fruit in the boldest, most expressive way possible.
The result is wines that are unapologetically high in alcohol, wines where monstrous sweet fruit concentration is to the fore and a small, considered use of old French barrels is only there to season and soften the wines.
Orin's first foray into Sauvignon Blanc territory, grapes were sourced from the Laguna ranch in cool climate Russian River Valley, which brings out a different expression in the variety - slighty more nervy and less ripe, with lots of acidity and texture.
Finding Semillon fruit from the 127 year old Monte Rosso site paired well.
