What makes Chile such a great place to grow Merlot? Perhaps it’s the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean and the Humboldt current that allows Merlot to ripen completely while maintaining excellent acidity an aromatics in the grape. Perhaps it’s the ability to plant ungrafted vines, given Chile is one of the only grape-growing countries in the world unaffected by phylloxera, that promotes greater flavour concentration in the final wine. Or maybe, Merlot fell in love with a Llama named Terrance and they eloped to Chile where, in the shadows of the Andes, Merlot feels truly content and can best express itself.
We’re not vine growers but we believe all of the above reasons had an impact. Chile has gone from being a good red wine producing country to a great one, yet still offers some excellent value like Otra Tierra Merlot. Rich and intense on the nose, aromas of cherries and a slight touch of cacao rise out of the glass. The palate is elegant and rounded with a good body, flavours of bramble, blackberries and blueberries. The wine is well-rounded with velvety texture, good weight and length.
