In 1956 Paternina hosted a very distinguished figure; Ernest Hemingway. We could sing the virtues of Ernest Hemmingway for several consecutive years. He wrote some lovely books, honestly, we had no idea 120 pages about a man who doesn't catch a fish could be so enthralling, but boy is it! He rubbed shoulders with the likes of Pablo Picasso and Marilyn Monroe. He also happened to know a fine wine when he tasted one.

This explains why Ernest attended the Paternina winery. With wines such as this, so expressive of bright red fruit, subtle oak and gently aged giving the wine an undercurrent of vanilla and spiced game, it was inevitable that a man of such taste would find himself here.

Founded in 1896, Federico Paternina established this winery on a site featuring cellars dug in the 16th century, in Ollauri, Rioja Alta. In 1956 Paternina hosted a very distinguished figure: Ernest Hemingway. It is widely known Hemingway´s love for Spain, its culture and of course Paternina wines. After passing by different hands along the history, finally in 2014 Marqués de la Concordia added the Paternia winery to its family. Marqués de la Concordia are now committed to preserve the status of this beloved high-quality Rioja name. Paternina Banda La Roja is fermented at a maximum temperature of 26º C. after fermentation, the wine is transferred to oak casks to slowly mature for 12 months, followed by a further 12 months ageing in bottle prior to its release.
