The Spanish-French relationship hasn’t been without its bumps in the road. Proximity has always been a bit of a catalyst for conflict. In fact, the most positive thing you can say about their relations is it has been better than the French and German’s. That and Picasso lived in Paris… Their history together has predominantly been one of war or clandestine hostility. Even today, French winegrowers have been livid about cheap Spanish exports from La Mancha. Thus, it’s nice when you see these two nations collaborating, like in this bottle. The French grapes Merlot & Syrah give this wine notes of blackberry, plum and baking spices which harmonize perfectly with Spanish varietals giving the wine red-fruit aromas and a succulent mouth feel. It’s good to get on!
Barbadillo was founded in 1821 in the province of Cadiz and continues to be owned by the founding Barbadillo family. The company is well known for both its Sherries and Cadiz wines which come from their own vineyards in the Jerez Superior District. The vines are planted in the chalky ‘Albariza’ soil in Barbadillo’s vineyards in the Jerez Superior District. The grape development is supported by a minimum level of irrigation and the grape harvest is done mechanically at night to avoid heat stress. The vinification is designed to treat the grapes as gently as possible using mainly gravity to move the grapes through the different stages of vinification to ensure only the smoothest tannins only are extracted. The grapes are cold soaked to extract the colour and fermented at 25ºC for a week in water cooled stainless steel tanks. The yeasts used are carefully selected for each grape variety. The final blend is decided upon depending on the vintage to create a balanced full flavoured young red wine.
