Given that this robust red blend is made by Jerome Bougard, the fourth generation of a family of winegrowers from the Cognac region, it's perhaps no surprise that this Spanish wine has some French flair. Is it bad we're now imagining a matador, in a moody black and white short film, where he sits in a Parisian café drinking red wine and pining after the beautiful woman at the next table? You're judging, but we know you're imagining it now too.

Grown in the Castilla y Leon region, the Spanish varietal Tempranillo gives this wine bright flavours of red berries and a savoury edge, while the addition of the French grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec & Syrah to the blend adds a richness to the wine and an intensity of dark black fruit flavours like blackcurrant and plum, along with an enticing herbal backbone. The wine is then aged in French oak to soften the tannins, deliver a silky mouthfeel and add subtle spice to the palate… The French woman in our story was a vegan and threw her drink in the matador's face... Fin!

Quinta Sardonia belongs to the Terras Gauda winery group. The project started in 1998, with their first vintage coming through in 2002. During 1999 and 2000, new vineyards were planted with the Tinto Fino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc varieties. Work both in the vineyard and the winery is governed by biodynamic methods, with the aim of attaining a good balance between the soil, the climate, the plant and the environment.
The team at Quinta Sardonia are very passionate about terroir. There are 15 different soil types that comprise the vineyard, all of which are of calcareous origins. Their viticultural process is implemented according to biodynamic principles to make sure they achieve the perfect balance between the soil, the climate, the vine and the environment. They only use their own compost as soil amendment, they maintain a living green mulch cover on the soil, they treat any disease with medicinal plant brews, work according to lunar cycles and preserve the natural flora of the place.
