As well as having, as we’re sure you’ll agree, a delightfully pretty label, this Ruby Port is more luxurious than a velour tracksuit and far more classy to boot. Coming as it does from a historic Port House that helped establish the list of officially accepted grape varieties for Port, this Collector’s Edition Ruby Reserve just gets it right: silky yet weighty, black fruit-driven yet balanced, it is a tasty number that can elevate the most humble of Stiltons to a more lofty taste experience.

This is a classic ruby Port, blended from wines produced in Ariamo Ramos Pinto’s own vineyards, that have an average age of five years.

Founded in 1880 by Adriano Ramos-Pinto, this famous house was taken over in 1990 when the Champagne House Louis Roederer became the majority shareholder. Their four quintas (vineyards) provide the majority of grapes in order to have maximum control over the quality of the wines, thereby maintaining their philosophy of controlling all stages of production.

The House has carried out extensive research into vine varieties for Port production and their findings have been accepted as the official recommendations by the authorities. Ramos Pinto also pioneered the study and use of vertical planting - which has since led to mechanisation of the vineyards.

Winemaker Joao Nicolas de Almeida helped select the five varieties for the Douro having joined Ramos Pinto in 1976.

The fermentation of the must is done by maceration and automatic reconstitution, with the aim of obtaining a better extract. After four or five days, the fermentation is interrupted by the addition of 20% of the aguardente (brandy aqua-vitae). Last of all, decantation is executed. It is a wine made without heat or cold treatment and neither is it filtered.
