Is Bründlmayer Riesling the best food wine in the world? It has a touch of sweetness to match it with spicy. It has piquant acidity to pair it with fatty. Tangy citrus undertones to sit next to something fruity, and a pleasing minerality that will go well with herby. And all from just 42 hectares over some of the best Kremstal vineyards, made by a centuries old farming family from Grundorf. It all sounds like the beginnings of a fairy story. The seven dwarves might need a bit of work, mind you...

."The Bründlmayer family has had its home in Grafenegg, Lower Austria, since the 17th century. Originally farming a mixture of produce, the family began growing wine exclusively in the 1980s. They now farm 17 hectares over some of the best vineyards in the eastern Kremstal, where silt-rich loess soils and an ideal climate help them in their quest to produce wines of pitch-perfect varietal typicity with a strong sense of place.

Philipp Bründlmayer, at 25, is the chief winemaker and the CEO of the Josef Bründlmayer estate. Taking an active interest in the vineyards from childhood, he studied at the School of Viticulture in Krems before going on to study Viticulture, Oenology and Wine Marketing in Vienna's University of Life Sciences. He has been making his own wines since 2012, already to favourable reviews from Jancis Robinson and Falstaff.

The winery is an advocate of sustainable viticulture and seeks to blend modern and traditional winemaking techniques. All grapes are picked by hand, and crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled steel tanks. A few months lees ageing brings depth and balance.
A hugely impressive wine, vibrant and precise, with touches of salt and stone underlying apricot, peach and lime flavours."
