You have to feel a little bit for Irish whiskey. They invented the bloomin stuff; as far flung as Japan to Sweden and Tennessee, all have Irish distillers to thank for the that devilishly delicious amber spirit. Yet, within, we believe, a day of discovering how to make whiskey, the Scottish said "aye, lassie I bet we can make some of that over here." For some reason Scotch just seemed to go down better than the Irish stuff and ever since then the Scottish have been laughing at them from over the channel. Those Scots can be a tactless bunch a times.

But wait the story's not over, out of nowhere Irish whiskey is making its grand comeback, all over the emerald isle craft distilleries are cropping up. With an eye on both the incredible history of Irish whiskey and the modern spirit movement, Diageo formed a craft Dublin based distillery in March 2017 and named it after legendary 19th Century distiller George Roe. Who's laughing now ay Scotland?

Released in March 2017, Roe & Co blended Irish whiskey marks Diageo's return to the Irish whiskey category having sold Bushmills a couple of years earlier. Roe & Co is bottled at 45% abv without chill filtration and is a blend of single malt and grain whiskeys matured exclusively in bourbon casks (a high proportion of which are first-fill). The brand has been created to reflect modern, contemporary luxury, in everything from pack to liquid, and with a focus of making Irish Whiskey more prominent in Europe’s booming cocktail culture.

Roe & Co is steeped in Dublin’s rich distilling history. It is named in honour of George Roe, the once world-famous whiskey maker and the driving force behind the golden era of Irish whiskey during the 19th century. His distillery, George Roe and Co, extended over 17 acres in the Thomas Street area of Dublin and was once Ireland's largest distillery. Roe and Co’s distinctive bottle also has its origins in the city’s distilling tradition. The bottle design is inspired by St. Patrick's Tower, a former windmill that used to power the Guinness brewery at St. James’s Gate, which was located next to the Roe and Co distillery. For hundreds of years George Roe and Co and Guinness were the two biggest names at the heart of Dublin’s historic brewing and distilling quarter.
