Let's have a quick history lesson:

James Sinclair was one of the first settlers of Blenheim, Marlborough, way back in the 19th century. Being a Scotsman in a land of Kiwis, we're sure you can image the difficulties in translation. In a battle of accents, it wasn't long before he became known as James Saint Clair. That is, until he adopted the nickname 'King of the Beaver'...think of that what you will...

Fast-forward to the 21st century and his land is now owned and used by the Ibbotson family who named their estate Saint Clair in honour of the beaver king. The Omaka Chardonnay is just one of the delectable, full bodied wines they make. A white wine with fruity aromas of peach and nectarine that carry on to the palate accompanied with a hint of cinnamon spice and a subtle nutty oak on the finish.

Saint Clair Family Estate is owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, who have been growing grapes in Marlborough since 1978. Having originally supplied grapes to local wineries, the estate produced its first wines in 1994, all of which won awards. The winery is named after a former owner of their farmland, James Sinclair, an energetic Scottish immigrant businessman viewed as the founder of Blenheim. He was also a prime mover in the establishment of Marlborough as a separate province from Nelson.

Saint Clair grows a number of varietals in six different vineyard sites. A grading system was introduced in 2001 to monitor quality levels in each site, and to ensure grapes are planted only where they are suited to the terroir. As a consequence vineyard practices are constantly being revised and updated to ensure the highest quality at all times. A state of the art winery has been built equidistant from each vineyard.

Saint Clair Omaka Chardonnay is a full bodied and rich white wine with a pale gold colour. It offers aromas of peaches and toasted hazelnuts whereas the palate brings in other fruits, such as nectarines, along a hint of spice.
