What do you dream about? Falling? Having to retake your A-levels even though you finished school around the same time Definitely Maybe was released? Walking down a Kubrickian style aisle where the shelves are filled solely with supermarket own label Pinot Grigio, all the while your mum's calling you on your Nokia from 2001 telling you to 'stop being such a wine snob and just pick something'? No, just us? Well, Small Fry winery dreamt of making the most delicious Orange wine in all of Oz. Luckily it was their dream that came true, not ours. This wine is deep golden orange and fairly cloudy. The nose has aromas of citrus peel and spice blended with notes of oatmeal and brown rice. The palate is full and dry with grainy tannins that make this the red drinkers white, multi layered, rewards time spent in the glass. This wine bridges the gap between something like an oaky chardonnay and the more confronting skin contact whites out there.
Smallfry wines is a partnership in business and life between Suzi Hilder and Wayne Ahrens. Viticulturists bitten by the winemaking bug, they took the chance to turn their own fruit into wine. That they are also foodies drives their winemaking down a certain path. Natural ferments, nil to minimal adjustment, old oak and a soft hand in the cellar allows the vineyard to speak. The style is food friendly, Euro style, with an eye to balance and subtlety.
