Soave Pieropan 2020
£20.00
Introducing the wine of Pieropan Soave Classico, in fair Verona is where we lay our scene. O yes, that's a fraction of a Romeo & Juliet quote alright. Before you become overly impressed, it's worth mentioning the only Shakespeare quotes we know relate to alcohol. Such as, "good company, good wine, good welcome can make good people!" Words to live by and Pieropan Soave Classico would create excellent people by the extension of that logic! From the oldest Soave producer in Veneto, Pieropan is expressive of quintessential white blossom, almonds and soft citrus fruits. "Good wine is a good familiar creature if it be well used!" Last one, we swear.
The Pieropan family has been producing wines in Soave since the 1890s. Indeed, they were the first producer to bottle a wine with the name Soave on the label in the early 1930s. Nino Pieropan took over from his father in 1970 and was the first producer in Soave to make a single vineyard wine, 'Calvarino', in 1971. While they are known for their whites, the Pieropan family is now making some of the best Valpolicella and Amarone from their 16-hectare property in the Val d’Illasi (to the west of Soave Classico) which they bought in 1999. The Trebbiano di Soave grapes are hand-picked from mid-September, while the Garganega grapes are picked later in October. The grapes are de-stemmed and crushed, with the free run juice fermented separately between 14-18°C in glass-lined cement tanks. The wine remains in glass-lined cement tanks on the fine lees for a period of time, which varies according to the vintage. In the spring following the harvest, the wine is bottled and then released after at least a further month in bottle.
