What’s in a name? Everything! This Albariño is a freedom fighter with attitude. Part of the ‘White Rioja Revolution’, it has battled its way to recognition together with many brothers in arms (Viognier, Verdejo, Chardonnay, to name a few). What are they protesting? The ridiculous notion that Rioja is only for red wine! Why, we’ve never heard something so outrageous. This crisp and tropical white shows real strength and individuality – we’d want this Guerrilla on our side any day. So bring it on, Tempranillo. The game is on. Viva la revolucion!

Vintae is an innovative and dynamic Spanish winemaking enterprise, working in several different Designation of Origin sites across the country. In 2003 it helped create a brand new Protected Geographical Indication, Valles de Sadacia, with the aim to bring Rioja whites back into the limelight. Vintae’s team work creatively to craft wines which express the unique terroir of each different location. The Castillo de Maetierra winery, where the Spanish White Guerrilla wines are made, is the only one specialising exclusively in producing white wines. Their range include Albariño, Verdejo, Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewürztraminer – many which are varieties that are grown for the first time in the Rioja region.

Valles de Sadacia is located in La Rioja, and is a PGI dedicated to producing high-quality white Spanish wines. It currently covers four of the seven valleys in La Rioja: Alhama, Cidacos, Iregua and Leza. The plan is to expand to advance the ‘Spanish White Wine Revolution’.

Raúl Acha started working with Vintae around the same time that Valles de Sadacia became a PGI, and he is now one of the technical directors on the team. He was born in Cardenas, La Rioja, where he was able to understand the making of high-quality wines from a young age. Today he is an agricultural engineer with a Bachelor degree in Oenology and Advanced Oenology Studies, and an emerging winemaking talent in the Rioja region. When making a collection of wines, he applies the most appropriate techniques by considering the climate conditions and geographic characteristics. The result is surprising Spanish wines for a modern consumer market.

Harvest takes place in the first half of September and is carried out during the night and morning when the temperature are the coolest – this helps protecting the grapes from oxidation. Stainless steel tanks are used when fermenting, which is done at the lower temperature of 12ºC. After fermentation the wine is kept on fine lees for four months, while it also undergoes partial malolactic fermentation.

This Albariño has an attractive straw yellow hue, and an aromatic nose with white flower notes and a clear fruity character. On the palate is shows good balance with fresh acidity, tropical undertones and a long crisp finish. This is a white that pairs perfectly with fish and seafood, or medium-spiced Asian vegetarian dishes.
