In ancient times France was called Gaul. Here Celtic tribes happily lived and enjoyed wine. Then came the Romans, who fancied making wine there. After some very bloody military defeats the tribes banned wine drinking and massacred the poor, local wine merchants- as the wine was blamed for their defeats on the field. This gives rise to the term ' Gauling'. Eventually this led the Celts to turn this most gauling situation to their advantage and make the best wine in the empire. If you were a thirsty Roman or Celt this is the kind of red you'd find in their taverns. Robust, black fruits, faintly leathery and spicy. A drink to settle the most vehment wine wrangling.
