Dutch settler and winemaker Adam Tas was imprisoned for exposing high-level corruption and, upon his release, re-named his farm Libertas to celebrate his freedom. These days, the winemaking seems to reflect his boldness and his pride in his vineyards. This fresh, fruity and floral Chenin is a suitable wine with which to raise a glass to this local hero and savour the simple pleasures in life, such as having the freedom to share wines like this with friends and family.

The vineyards of Table Mountain would appear to originate in farmland owned by Adam Tas, a Dutch settler. A standard bearer of the Burgher Infantry, Tas married Elizabeth von Brakel, a wealthy widow who owned large tracts of farmland. His exposure of the corrupt trading practices of the Cape governor, Willem Adriaan van der Stel, led to thirteen months incarceration, at the end of which he re-named his home ‘Libertas’.

The grapes were sourced from a selection of vineyards in the Paarl and Worcester areas. The 100% Chenin Blanc grapes were harvested by hand and in the cellar, the juice was briefly kept on the skins before being fermented at 13C for 14 days. No eggs or dairy-derived products were used during winemaking process.

This is a lively, fruity, easy-drinking wine made from 100% Chenin Blanc. It can be enjoyed on its own or with poultry and pasta dishes.
