It was at 21, an age where most people's biggest decision is which club they'll be rolling out of at 3am, that Mauricio Lorca determined his future career path. Initially intent on studying medicine but after an educational visit to his senior school by a group of enologists, he realised winemaking was the only path for him.

We have no doubt Mauricio would have made a fine doctor, but we feel he made the right choice. After all, he's now one of the most respected winemakers in Mendoza. Producing wines such as Tematico Malbec with inviting aromas of ripe black plums, blackcurrants and red fruits with hints of flowers, on the nose. Medium to full bodied on the palate with balanced, very soft tannins conveying an overall sensation of gentleness and drinkability; there are lovely subtle spice notes on the palate finishing with juicy black cherry flavours. Another doctor in the world would have been great but while sipping on this wine, it feels like a fair trade.
As a young Mendocinean lad Mauricio was all set to study medicine after high school Prio His Mum was initially disappointed! But Mauricio has become one of the most highly respected winemakers in Mendoza and we are all grateful for his sudden career decision. Mauricio began his career at Catena Zapata, aged 21. When 23 he travelled north to Salta to join the team at Michel Torrino and 1 year later, aged just 24, he became head winemaker at Luigi Bosca. 4 years later he assumed the same role at Finca La Celia. Having amassed a huge amount of high profile experience and respect, Mauricio began his own project in 2002, with a small winery in Lujan de Cuyo, and his own vineyards in Vista Flores, Uco Valley. Today, as well as running his own successful operation and exporting to many markets worldwide, he is much in demand as a consultant to more than 20 wineries.
The philosophy of Bodega Y Vinedos Mauricio Lorca is to make beautiful wines that express their high-altitude terroir. Mauricio plants high density (6850 vines per hectare) in his Vista Flores vineyards, which have grown from 29 to 120 hectares in recent years, at 1050 metres above sea level. Yields are kept low to achieve optimum fruit quality and concentration (approx. 1 kilo per plant). The soil is sandy and stony and a combination of flood and drip irrigation to complement the 250mm average annual rainfall, using snowmelt water from the Andes mountains.
