Good old Rafa Nadal he’s a fine tennis player. We’re not sure there’s been anyone that works so well with clay since Patrick Swayze in Ghost. A great Mallorcan man is Nadal, but arguably not the greatest, o no, we reckon that honour goes to Miquel Àngel Cerda, who runs Terra de Falanis. Frustrated by the lack of quality Mallorcan wine, Miguel and his buisness partner decided to make their own from family Callet vines, using the small tanks previously used at the family dairy farm. This hobby soon escalated into something else when they, & many others, realised that their wines were different & of a higher quality to others on the island. Today, they make beautiful wines like Muac - expressive of black berries and subtle baking spices. Just like Nadal the folks at Terra de Falanis just keep knocking it out of the park… Wait, that’s a baseball thing, isn’t it? Acing it? We’ll go with 'acing it'.
A new venture from the famous Anima Negra Bodega in Felanitx Mallorca. The project is all about the Terroir of the vineyards, that all must have a coastal or mountain influence, local grape varieties & be true to their origins. Wines are made in Felanitx where the utmost attention to detail is given to the delicate old vine Mallorcan varietals. Low yielding vines of at least 25 years old are selected from their own vineyards that are trained to produce the best quality grapes possible. This is done through canopy training, green harvests and stressing the vines through a lack of irrigation and competing with cereals such as mustard seed in the vineyards. All grapes are handpicked and pass over selection tables as well as through a state of the art grape selection machine that only allows the perfect grapes to be used dependent upon their colour & weight... Local indigenous yeasts are used for all fermentations at strict temperatures controlled at 28ºC in small 7.000 & 10.000 Litre stainless steel tanks. Approximately 17 days for the maceration. The wine is then passed to a combination of American & French Oak barriques of 2nd & 3rd year use that have been used to age top single vineyard wines. a very light natural filtration takes place using no dairy products are used before bottling & ageing in the bottle before release.
