Prometheus is not just the name of a disappointing prequel to Alien starring Michael Fassbender, he's also a significant figure in Greek mythology. Prometheus defied the gods and gave humanity the gift of fire, enabling progress and civilisation. For this, his punishment was to have his liver pecked out by an eagle for eternity. Some say that Hercules freed Prometheus, others say that Prometheus and the eagle became the best of friends and ended up solving wine related crime together.

After his release from eagle jail, Prometheus stole grape varieties from Bordeaux and gave them to the Californians. Matchbook winery honoured this gift from Prometheus by making an estate grown Bordeaux blend with scintillating flavours of blackberry, dark plum, fresh violets and vanilla, and naming it the Arsonist. What Prometheus robs next, only time will tell.

325 acres in the Dunnigan Hills AVA were purchased by John & Lane Giguiere in 2002. In the spring of that year 73 acres were planted to Chardonnay, Syrah, Tempranillo, Graciano & Malbec. The first harvest was in the fall of 2004 and Winemaker Dan Cederquist came aboard in early 2005 and has supervised all winemaking activities since then. The first wines were released in 2006. The vintages of 2004-2007 were all made at Sonoma Wine Company near Santa Rosa. Matchbook Winery was built in 2008 and all subsequent vintages have been made at the vineyard site. 2000+ contiguous acres were purchased in 2011 with new planting every year. The company currently has 1500+ acres under vine and 280 acres planted to Spanish & Greek olives.
Estate Grown Cabernet, Malbec and Petit Verdot are grown utilizing a combination of vertical trellising and hanging curtain trellising. Clay loam soils with a high proportion of Corning red gravel result in excellent drainage and growing conditions. The fruit is mechanically harvested at night and on the crush pad within 30 minutes for optimum freshness. A yeast cocktail is used for fermentation. When the wine has completed fermentation, it is transferred into oak barrels, a blend of European and American oak (30% new), and left to age an average of 22 months. Prior to bottling the wine is egg-white fined and sterile filtered at bottling.
