Hailing from the capital of East Macedonia and Thrace, this deep Greek red wine is certainly something to make a Drama of. Its key players, Syrah and Agiorgitiko, bounce off each other in a raucous plum and cherry double act, while complex tannin and a velvet texture offer a gripping sub-plot.

You might well wish to pour yourself Act Two before the fifteen minute interval's up, and with an admission price of eighteen pounds there's every chance you'll come back for a further performance to make sure you caught every aspect of this memorable production.

Ktima Pavlidis has 65 privately-owned hectares of vineyards in the Drama PGI, which were planted between 1998 and 2004. They currently cultivate 65 hectares of vines, 20 hectares of which are organically managed and 45 hectares managed according to the principles of sustainable viticulture. Despite our relative young age in the market Ktima Pavlidis is very popular in Greece and has a growing worldwide presence (USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland etc). Since 2010 they have made a significant turn towards indigenous varieties. In 2011 the five hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that were the first vines planted in the estate, were replaced by Robolla and Assyrtiko.

They believe that great wines must reflect their terroir, vintage and personality, in their case the terroir of Drama, a place well-known since Ancient times for winemaking. They believe that a wines personality is directly and primarily connected to the vineyard. Their philosophy is built arounf putting a lot of effort into the vineyards to produce high quality grapes, with minimum intervention in the winery (use of elevators for gravity flow, fermenting with natural yeasts etc.)

Winemaker Nikos Karatzas studied at the Bordeaux Institute of Oenology, where he had the opportunity to meet great professors and people that shared his passion. Despite his youth, he takes great pride in making authentic wines that are highly appreciated all over the world. In 2010 Nikos was named CEO of the company.

The grapes were hand-picked during the night, chilled to 6-7 C and then underwent selection by hand at two sorting tables. Then they used elevators to fill the tanks in order to preserve all the varietal aromas and phenolic potential. The wine was transferred by gravity to French oak barrels. There, following malolactic fermentation, it is left to age for 12 months, with a further 12 months in the bottle.

With Thema red they are trying to express the signature of Drama’s terroir, using indigenous or international grape varieties. Blending together two varieties like the powerful Syrah and the noble Agiorgitiko, each so different from the other, has resulted in a dense wine, which is velvety and harmonious. Thema red is a blend of several micro-lots, with each parcel vinified separately.

Thema has an intense dark purple colour, with violet reflections. The nose is dominated by an intense bouquet of cherries and plums, followed by scents of chocolate, smoke and vanilla. Generous in the mouth, it is well balanced, with lively tannins that contribute to a velvety structure. A full -bodied red, with a long and fruity finish and long-lasting structure. Perfect with grilled game and full-on cheeses.
