It’s rare we engage in a touch of patriotism, unless it’s one of the Queens many Birthdays in which case we can sing the first two lines of Auld Lang Syne with the best of them. However, the producer of Thorne & Daughters, John Seccombe, evokes a bit of flag waving among us as he may be the only South African winemaker to have trained in the UK, at Plumpton College. His wine? Fantastic! Wander’s Heart is rich and complex with distinct aromas of tea leaf, dried cranberry, exotic wood, star anise, coriander seed and citrus peel, and a whiff of the apothecary's chest. The aromas follow onto the palate met with mandarin peel, cloves and damson. The wine is bright and keenly balanced, very pure in its fruit with a dusting of fine tannin to complete the picture.
The British may not be too hot at making trade deals but it seems in the UK we can produce some truly remarkable winemakers!
