Tinto Rey Rosé 2017
£13.50
Tinto Rey is Spanish for "Red King," we know what you're thinking "an esoteric, bilingual Lewis Carrol reference is an unusual choice for a wine label." We would typically agree with you, after all the Red King spends the entire tale of 'Through the Looking Glass' asleep, hardly an inspiring namesake. However, Red King is actually a reference to Tinto Rey using some of the highest quality and distinctive red grape varieties from the Iberian Peninsula.
The Tinto Rey Rosé is a beautiful blend of Tempranillo, Tannat and Verdejo, with alluring aromas of perfume, watermelon and white nectarine that just begs you to take a sip. Fresh stone fruit flavours on the palate are balanced by crisp acidity. Pleasing flavours of white peach and Rainier cherry lead to a delightfully long finish. Tinto Rey seems to be a decidedly appropriate name after all.
325 acres in the Dunnigan Hills AVA were purchased by John & Lane Giguiere in 2002. In the spring of that year 73 acres were planted to Chardonnay, Syrah, Tempranillo, Graciano & Malbec. The first harvest was in the fall of 2004 and Winemaker Dan Cederquist came aboard in early 2005 and has supervised all winemaking activities since then. The first wines were released in 2006. The vintages of 2004-2007 were all made at Sonoma Wine Company near Santa Rosa. Matchbook Winery was built in 2008 and all subsequent vintages have been made at the vineyard site. 2000+ contiguous acres were purchased in 2011 with new planting every year. The company currently has 1500+ acres under vine and 280 acres planted to Spanish & Greek olives.
The 2017 Rose is a blend of Tempranillo, Tannat and Verdejo, all from our Estate Vineyards. The wine is unique in that all 3 varietals were co-fermented resulting in better integration of flavours. The juice was cold-fermented @ 50 degrees (F) in stainless steel tanks to preserve its freshness and bottled shortly after completion of fermentation.
