Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, that’s Grillo. If it’s not being fortified and transformed into Marsala (which we love), it’s put with other grapes in a blend. It is rarely given centre stage and allowed to shine, poor thing. But this bridesmaid just got married and that makes Uriel its magical first dance.

Dressed head-to-toe in summery orchard fruit like some kind of bridal Carmen Miranda, it is a show-stopping beauty of a wine, with racy freshness and a classy perfume. This is one wedding you really want to be there for.

Poggio Anima is a joint venture between Brunello di Montalcino producer Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie and his importer Vine Street Imports. Their aim is to source grapes from vineyards they have existing relationships with and create wine with a real sense of place. Poggio Anima translates as ‘Hill of Soul’, which they want to capture the ‘soul’ of each vineyard and grape, with no manipulation, at an affordable, ‘everyday’ price.

The vineyards are in the Salemi area of western Sicily, about 25 miles from Marsala. They are planted facing east, following the vertical trellis system on sandy and clay-rich soil, using guyot pruning. The vineyards are at an altitude of around 1,600 feet and the vines are about 15 years old.

Grillo, which is also known as Riddu, is a very resilient grape that can withstand the strong heat and wind on Sicily. It is probably best known as the foundation for Marsala (and is also used in blends) and but in its ‘dry’, pure form it has many interesting characteristics.

After de-stemming and maceration for a few hours, the grapes undergo a soft press before fermentation takes place, in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then left on its lees for a fortnight before being bottled.

Light straw yellow in colour, it has a rich bouquet of tropical fruit with notes of apricots and peaches. It is full and round on the palate with a lovely balancing acidity and a long perfumed finish.
