It’s quite something to think that, in 1917, as WWI was at its most hellish in northern France, 300 miles south, just south of the rustic hamlet of Pouilly, someone decided to plant a vineyard. Whoever they were, they chose a very good spot for it, and it is now being lovingly cared for by Maine and Jean-Marie Guffens-Heynan, who, with their 2010 Pouilly-Fuissé, have created a lusciously rich, creamy, whilst minerally and gentle wine that does justice to this lovely plot.
When he created the négociant Verget in 1990, Jean-Marie Guffens applied the very same rules as for his own production. Verget’s philosophy can be summed up in one simple sentence: “the best wine comes from the best grapes”. This elementary saying is the corner stone of Verget. Thus, whether in Mâconnais, Chablis or Cote d’Or, the best vineyards and best terroirs are selected to produce quality wines. The raison d’être of Verget is to reveal all the character of the wines by revealing their terroirs. Verget successfully implemented this process for some time now in Chablis and Côte d’Or regions. But in Mâconnais, which has historically been producing generic wines, this approach gains its full meaning. Verget purchases grapes from passionate wine growers, selected according to their reliability and their working methods that respect the vineyard and the terroir. Over time, these wine-growers became valuable partners and Verget determines with them the work and the yield of the vineyards. NULL The grapes for this Pouilly-Fuissé were taken from a plot at the bottom of the hamlet of Pouilly, that was planted in 1917. The soil is clay and limestone, with a high proportion of clay on surface.
