Maury is not, as many of you may believe, an American tabloid talk show, hosted by Maury Povitch but a fortified wine from the South of France. Well, technically it's both those things but one is delicious and nuanced, the other is a TV show with over 2,500 episodes all of which involve paternity tests and shouting, so there is only one that will occupy our time. Made from the Grenache grape and aged oxidatively this red fortified wine has powerful aromas of salted almonds, figs, redcurrants and is a great alternative to old tawny port. It will also, at no point demand you take a lie-detector test; the perfect peacemaker for a family dinner!
Maury is a wine to which alcohol has been added “Mutage” is the technical term denoting the operation which consists of stopping the fermentation by adding alcohol during its elaboration. This operation allows producers to conserve grape sugar hence the term Vin Doux Naturel –Natural Sweet Wine. Over the years the winery has built up substantial stocks of old wines. Much of the very old wine is ageing in the roof space of their rabbit warren of buildings, often in 100-year-old demi-muids. The vast majority of these contain mother wines dating from the late 1920s. When one is bottled, only about 1/3 of the wine is drawn off which is then topped up with a single vintage, currently 1990.
