Viré Clessé 'Les Fargettes' Chardonnay 2015
£14.00
This little number will put a cheeky smile on your face or perhaps even a slight grin, but try not to let the wine dribble out of your mouth if you grin - it would spoil the debonair appearance of sipping on a Burgundy.
Your eyebrows will lift up in delight as you nose the aromas of fresh citrus and pear drops and then you will no doubt thump your hand down on the table in total satisfaction as it goes on to reveal a warm richness, with gentle brioche and creamy notes courtesy of the malolactic fermentation (don't worry, no one knows what it means). Blimey it's like a Herbal Essences advert, but not in a shower.
Dating back to the 1982, the first vintage of Viré Clessé was released in 1998. From the start, significant investment was put into the winery to ensure the potential to create top quality wine. Stainless steel tanks, computerization, temperature control, modernized bottling equipment were all part of the initial investment. Each year since, they have continued to expand, witnessing the fruits of its investment when Viré Clessé was designated a communal appellation of the Macon region in 1997.
Viré Clessé is an appellation comprised of two of the highest quality wine producing villages in the Macon Region. It is located at the northern tip of the region, close to the town of Macon itself. The vine-filled hills are comprised of the same famous limestone soils associated with the renowned wines of the Cote d'Or but at a much more modest price. 'Les Fargettes' in particular comes courtesy of grapes sourced from a single vineyard within the appellation.
Proudly produced under the careful hand of Vincent Bartement (a IWC White Wine Maker of the Year), who has worked hard to raise the quality bar to where the wines are today. Cave de Viré although not certified organic promotes sustainable viticulture with limited use of sprays, fertilizers and pesticides in the vineyard.
Made from 100% Chardonnay, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel temperature controlled vats and under go full malolactic fermentation prior to be filtered and bottled. This Chardonnay is full and round displaying fresh citrus, pear drop and peach accompanied by stony mineral complexities, white flower and a gentle hint of honey comb.
