Many moons ago (possibly 47), when we first discovered top quality Pinot Noir grown in Australia, we descended into a similar state of shock as when we discovered you can ski in Australia. “What? But… there’s snakes, deserts and beautiful tanned people everywhere, how could it possibly be cool enough to ski down to a bar, where we could enjoy a locally produced Pinot Noir? Wakeboarding past a Shiraz vineyard fine, but Pinot?”
Well, it turns out Australia is hot, however, plantings like those for the Wakefield Estate in Adelaide Hills have enough altitude, and exposure to the deep Antarctic waters around the southern coast, that Pinot Noir grapes can fully ripen while still maintaining freshness and aromatic purity. Wakefield Estate Pinot Noir has a soft and silky structure with varietally typical notes of redcurrants and strawberries backed by savoury characters of black pepper, cinnamon and forest floor. Dust off your skis, we’re going down under!
Wakefield is a third-generation family wine business and was founded in 1969 by Bill Taylor who was inspired by his love for the red wines of Bordeaux’s Medoc region. He was drawn to South Australia’s Clare Valley where his first 178-hectare vineyard was planted on the banks of the Wakefield River close to the village of Auburn. The vineyard was carefully chosen to benefit from red-brown loam over limestone soils (also known as Terra Rossa) and the Clare Valley’s cool climate. Today Wakefield is headed up by Mitchell Taylor whose philosophy blends an ‘old world’ estate mind set with ‘new world’ winemaking innovation; coupled with an almost fanatical attention to detail and obsession with quality. This results in wines of tremendous quality and style that are made with respect for the company’s family heritage.
