Weingut Wageck Fundament Spätburgunder 2013

Herr Wageck was one of the more notable residents of Pfalz. A lovely man. But with the heaviest, thickest eyebrows ever. So heavy, in fact, they began to weigh down his forehead, until they literally drooped over his eyes. This was no good! Wageck couldn't see his beloved, stick-thin wife.

His neighbours set to solving the problem. Barbers failed. Gardeners failed. Lumberjacks gave up. No matter how often the bushy protuberances were cut, they simply grew back thicker. In the end, Wageck turned to the winery to see if they could help. They fashioned a Pinot Noir as pleasant and rounded as him, of such surprising persistence just one sip had him raising his eyebrows! Problem solved.

Weingut Wageck Pfaffman takes its name from Wilhelm Wageck, who established the winery in 1900. It is now under the control of Wageck's great-grandsons Frank and Thomas Pfaffman, both of whom studied winemaking in Geisenheim and who take charge of white and red wine respectively. Wageck seeks to make dry and pure wines that allow the character and minerality of the soil to shine through, the low yield of the vines and the ripeness of the fruit giving the wines a lower level of acidity and a firm, full body.

The Pfaffmans believe that great wine is created in the vineyard, and that only the best grapes will make the best wines. All grapes are hand-picked and hand-sorted in the winery. Red wines are mash-fermented and pressed after two to four weeks, after which malolactic conversion takes place in oak barrels. White grapes are pressed after up to 24 hours stnding time, temperature-controlled fermentation taking place either in wood or in stainless steel.
