Weingut Walldorf Spatburgunder 2015
£25.00
Ever since Sideways, when that git Miles let the cat out of the bag about Pinot Noir, the prices of top Red Burgundy are gradually becoming unassailable for mere mortals, as tech tycoons and oil oligarchs buy up all the Domaine Romanee-Conti. We tried to distract them with space programs and the possibility of infusing their skeleton with adamantium, but the billionaires couldn't be swayed and inevitably racked up the prices of Pinot Noir. There are still some excellent value Burgundies on the market and our buyers work very hard to track them down, but it's becoming an increasing challenge, we do however have an ace up our sleeve...
If you skip over the border, making sure Jeff Bezos' drones aren’t following you, you’ll find a country where they grow exceptional Pinot Noir and barely anyone knows as they call it Spatburgunder!
Yes, winemakers in Germany are growing incredible Pinot Noir and charging a price that belies its marvellous quality. For example, you don't have to be the real-life Monopoly Man to afford Weingut Waldorf Spatburgunder, yet on the palate it resonates unbelievable quality with intense, tart red berries and rhubarb, complex savoury notes of truffle oil, cracked black pepper and struck match. Don't tell Miles though, he'll only ruin Spatburgunder for the rest of us!
The winery Walldorf is located in the heart of Rheinhessen, in Saulheim. Viticulture has been shaping our region and our family for centuries. In 1896 the brothers Walldorf founded today's winery "Walldorf". Much has changed in this long time; Every generation has shaped the winery and the wines in its own way. Since 2012, Max Dexheimer, the fifth generation has managed the family business.
Weingut Walldorf focus on wines made from Riesling, Silvaner, Weissburgunder and Spatburgunder. The vineyards are cultivated and maintained according to biodynamic principles, to create original, characterful and expressive wines.
