The Oddbins Take

Wine people are an odd bunch, intent on using descriptors that makes the rest of the world spit-take while sipping on their reasonably priced Cabernet Sauvignon. "Sorry, what does that New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc smell like?!" "Cat pee on a gooseberry bush, why, are you not into that?"

That's just the tip of the iceberg, there's so many common tasting notes that to many will seem utterly absurd... Mosel Riesling; petrol on slate. Pinot Noir; red berries on wet leaves. Good Syrah; blackberries and pencil shaving, ridiculous! Nebbiolo is our favourite however; tar and roses! We're not entirely sure who's been going around eating tar and roses but we sort of get what they mean; with most Nebbiolo there is a wonderful floral character combining with a certain smoky, earthiness.

Gemma Nebbiolo Ruja is a great example if you want to know what we're talking about. The wine has a bright ruby red colour with the distinctive Nebbiolo aromas of rose, violet and subtle smoke are followed by a seductive mix of bright red fruit. Whilst soft and elegant on the palate, the flavours linger with a rare mixture of powder and finesse.

Sometimes you've got to stop and smell the tar and roses!
