The Arran Malt Scotch Whiskies

During the early 1800s, many distilleries could be found across the small Isle of Arran, though not all of them were legal. Today, The Arran distillery stands proud as the only distillery operating on the island. And you’ll be glad to know that they’re licensed too!

The island’s past distilleries fell into disuse when demand for scotch increased, they simply couldn’t compete with the quantities being produced elsewhere. However, Arran sought to revive the whisky-making tradition and built a distillery in Lochranza, at the north end of the island. Three years later, in 1998, the first cask of Arran Single Malt Scotch Whisky was opened by Scottish film star Ewan McGregor and the first legal dram on Arran for over 160 years was released.

Arran now produce a wide range expressions and aged whiskies that are all made using traditional methods. Each whisky is fermented in Oregon pine washbacks and distilled in tall, swan-necked copper stills before being matured in specially selected oak ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks.
