The Loire Valley

The first vineyards in the Loire Valley were planted by the Romans, presumably while Asterix and Obelix were taking some downtime from resisting Caesar’s occupation. Those cheeky Gauls must have slipped a little of the druid’s magic potion into the barrels though, because it wasn’t long before Loire’s wines had become the most highly esteemed wines in France and the UK. Although Bordeaux and Burgundy may have overtaken the Loire in the wine fame stakes, Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé’s strikingly flinty, gooseberry and grapefruit laced whites are some of the most sought after wines in the world. But, there’s more to the Loire than just these two…

While Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé may have rested on their laurels and rising demand, content to flex their steely Sauvignon Blanc muscles, quietly behind them regions like Cheverny (who throw a little Chardonnay into the mix), Menetou-Salon and Reuilly have been working out and beefing up. Without the weight of a famous name to propel them forward, these regions rely on their outstanding quality and value for money. This is exactly what Oddbins is all about, so we’re only too happy to help them out… explore these lesser known regions and you’ll see what we mean.

But it isn’t just Sauvignon Blanc, the Loire has strength in depth, it also excels in elegant rosé, lighter reds, fizz, unctuous dessert wines and spectacular Chenin Blanc, which we feel is one of the world’s most versatile and underrated grape varieties. Even Muscadet is beginning to shake off its unfashionable reputation, proving that sometimes the simple things in life are the best.

Although the 2012 vintage was a testing one, the quality of the dry white wines emerging is very exciting. Maybe they got hold of another glug of Asterix’s magic potion.
