This little Italian-American has an exciting history worthy of its own Who Do You Think You Are show. The US cherished it as its own for a century before the 1960s when some clever fellows found out that it is actually, *da da daaa*, Italy’s own Primitivo! Over in sunny California, it is a juicy, relatively sweet, high-alcohol, anise-scented beastie (and makes the much-loved, sweetly fruity White Zinfandel rosé), whereas in Puglia it is more restrained rustic, but still fruity. Whichever country you find it in, you can bet your boots that it’s single and, we think the reason is that it has such a good time on its own, it simply doesn’t need anyone else!
