Marlborough Region Wines

If Marlborough was mentioned 30 years ago, you’re first thought might be of a small town just south of Swindon or of a packet of fags (smoking was a thing in the early 80s). It would, however be unlikely to be of a region in the South Island of New Zealand. No longer, such is the meteoric rise of this scrappy little district, that you might just start salivating with a mere whisper of Marlborough.

Modern classic; that’s how we’d describe their wines, like the work of George Orwell but, you know, without the dystopian allegories about totalitarianism. The wines of Marlborough currently make up 77% of New Zealand’s total wine production and it seems unnecessary to mention this, but the majority of them are made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape. From house hold names like Cloudy Bay, to wines that you learnt about from us; like Kuru Kuru, we can’t get them in the fridge fast enough.

Yet, that’s not all they do, no sir-ey bob. Their Pinot Noir, like Saint Clair Pioneer Block, are quickly becoming recognised as some of the finest in the world and Chardonnay such as Greywacke’s is making Burgundian whites tremble in their boots. That’s just the tip of the ice-berg, they also produce stonking Rieslings and mouth-watering Pinot Gris. Yep, Marlborough’s no one trick pony, you’ve come for the sideways trotting but you’ll stay for the back-flips.
