Rioja

Ever since the 70s, when Brits, bored of package holidays to Blackpool and ‘Jolly Boys Outings’ to Margate, started bothering the folk of Benidorm with yells of “more vino por favour,” Rioja has been a region loved in Britain. Rioja, predominately made from Tempranillo and Garnacha, is so loved that, in the town of Haro there is an annual Rioja festival, where participants conduct a food fight of sorts, except with wine. No doubt at the end of the night, there’s a few partyers ringing their T-shirts out to get one last, delicious drop. In fact, those big, oaky, red fruit, mouth-bombs have become renowned across the globe, as some of the finest wines in the world.

We love that style of Rioja, the wines of Vina Ardanza and La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva have been on our shelves for many a moon because their classic flavours of Intense dark-fruit, coconut, vanilla, leather and dark chocolate make us flamenco across the tapas bar. This is not the be all and end all of Rioja however…

Those shrewd Spaniards have been mixing things up; Rioja is becoming just as renowned for lighter, floral, fruit driven reds as they are for oaky beasts. Wines such as Louis Alegre Koden, might just change your perception if you think you know all there is to know about Rioja. “Muchas gracias camarero!”
